DPS Health is Proud to Announce IU Health  will pilot Virtual Lifestyle Management™ Service

(Los Angeles, CA) – June 1st, 2011 – DPS Health and Indiana University Health, formerly Clarian Health, are pleased to announce the pilot of DPS Health’s Virtual Lifestyle Management™ (VLM) Service to IU Health employees and patients of affiliated primary care practices. IU Health is interested in evaluating the impact of VLM on patient and employee health and engagement through the clinically-linked, internet-based, weight management service that helps overweight adults become more active, eat better, lose weight and live healthier.

Through VLM, users learn how to eat a healthy diet and get more physically active through media-rich, interactive lessons, streaming audio, interactive workbooks, plus nutrition and activity planning and tracking tools. Users can track their eating and physical activity to easily monitor their behavioral trends and long-term outcomes, and also have access to email and chat rooms, greatly increasing support and creating an efficient flow of information.

VLM is based on the landmark Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), a weight management approach developed by the University of Pittsburgh faculty under a federal research grant from the National Institutes of Health. Through web-based technology, VLM delivers the DPP research-proven lifestyle intervention, aiming to enhance the efficiency and success of healthcare provider weight management programs. To create VLM, the University of Pittsburgh, along with DPS Health, worked to improve patient engagement through web- based learning, tracking, and motivation.

“Indiana University Health has always been on the leading edge of healthcare delivery,” said Neal Kaufman, M.D., M.P.H., founder and CEO of DPS Health.  “We see great potential in this partnership, and look forward to working with IU Health to help employees and patients change their behaviors to improve their long term health.”

Deeply concerned about the epidemic of weight-related illness, rising health costs and chronic conditions, Kaufman founded DPS Health to address serious chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, in order to help clinicians more effectively improve health outcomes of their patients. The impetus for this came from the findings of the landmark NIH-funded Diabetes Prevention Program. Kaufman is a proven leader who has built a record of trust through local, state and national efforts to improve public health.
